Is this thing still on?

Well, it’s been a while. Four and a half years, to be exact.

When I first started this blog, I was fresh out of university, working my first ever journalism job in Derbyshire and writing under the pseudonym notontheguestlist. And things have changed a bit since then, as you’d expect them to over a decade.

A decade. Blimey.

So, I’m now a 30-something (who just about makes the dreaded Millennial bracket) living in London and working in television and have somehow today found myself tinkering with my WordPress account, changing the look of this blog and deciding to attempt to breathe some new life into it.

So why have I decided to come back after a five-year silence, this time without the anonymity and at a time when everything anyone says online is more open to scrutiny and criticism than ever?

Well, first of all, it’s not as though I’m Logan Paul. Thank god. And I like making people laugh, which is something I’ve been told I used to achieve here. Plus, it’s become apparent over the last few years that I have a thick skin when it comes to the internet – which is lucky because I’m rather prone to making a bit of a tit of myself on it.

Let me give you just a couple of examples.

First of all, around the time I last posted, a video of me setting my own hair alight went viral around the world.

To recap, I was having a rather merry time at a colleague’s leaving do, saw a couple of my companions making a video and leaned over to try and join them. Over an open candle. Which made part of my hair burst into flames. Which everyone found hilarious, despite the smell.

Oh my word, the smell… have you ever got a whiff of burning hair? It permeates.

This lovely little nugget ended up on Buzzfeed, E! online and Huffington Post to name a few – and was even shown on an American talk show, giving me my first taste of internet “fame”. The result was a host of dribbling online commentators expressing their outrage at how I could possibly endanger my life to get in a ‘selfie’ – and let’s not even start on the fact the video was in portrait rather than landscape. Horror upon absolute horror!

Then let us fast forward to this Christmas just gone, when a video I posted on my twitter account as part of a family joke ended up as a story on the Mail Online. I mean, someone must have sent Santa and his sleigh hurtling full pelt into the presses to stop them for this breaking news:

As it was the Mail, the resulting abuse I got from this was in its own special league. “Whore!” “Ingrate!” “Wannabe!” “Sour-faced princess!” “SNOWFLAKE!!!” they cried. But this hands down, was the winner…

It’s like they KNOW me.

So there you have it. My name is Lindsey Bowers, I used to blog here and now I’m back and I can be a bit of a twonk on the World Wide Web at times. But I don’t really mind if I’m at least making my mates chuckle, especially as we now seem to be living in a world that could do with more laughter.

I have to admit, after years of only ever writing professionally, it feels strange to be writing at length about whatever I feel like on a public platform again. I do feel out of practice and like the cogs need some oiling and turning before I get into the flow once more. Especially as future posts will differ quite a lot from what’s in the archives.

If you end up looking through my past stuff on here, please do keep in mind they were written when I was younger, more naive and living in a far less sensitive culture.

Notontheguestlist was snide and at times downright unkind. I admit I’ve deleted masses of past posts, aghast that I was ever so bitchy about celebrities and what they were wearing and who they were dating. Now my job entails working with social media and people in the spotlight – and over the years I’ve come to learn that celebrities are just people who shit and bleed and hurt like the rest of us. Even Logan Paul. Not that I knew who he was before he got devoured by the twitter monkeys.
